Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Wednesday there were “clear indications” that India had violated Canadian sovereignty, as the countries row over the killing of a Sikh separatist on Canadian soil last year that Ottawa blamed on New Delhi.

Twice since July 2022, Moninder Singh, spokesperson for a Sikh advocacy group in Canada's British Columbia province, has had police come to his door in the Vancouver suburb of Surrey.

Canada is home to the world’s largest Sikh community outside of India. The Indian government looks upon them with suspicion and claims that they are proponents of the separatist Khalistan movement, which seeks to carve a homeland for Sikhs out of India’s Punjab region.
