There have been 11,000 acres in New Jersey burned in forest fires this year, Greg McLaughlin, the state administrator for Forests & Natural Lands, said this week. The state has averaged about 4,000 acres per year since 2000, McLaughlin said.

Firefighters have made progress battling the Jennings Creek wildfire, New York State Park Police said Thursday. The fire is raging in the Sterling Forest State Park, and has impacted Passaic and Orange Counties.

The battle against a wildfire on the New Jersey/New York border continued Thursday morning, after Orange County declared a state of emergency and crews successfully held the line of fire for another night.

The Jennings Creek Fire in New Jersey has burned nearly 4,300 acres. It's about half contained as firefighters have performed controlled burns, getting rid of dry vegetation that could otherwise fuel the blaze.

Firefighters are slowly making progress in their battle against a wildfire at the border of New Jersey and New York.
