Some reports initially showed the Congress past the majority mark of 46 in the 90-member assembly, as predicted in exit polls, but the tables turned as the BJP later crossed the magic number in early trends.

India's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) appeared on course for a surprise win on Tuesday in polls in the northern state of Haryana, but was trailing the opposition in the first elections in a decade in troubled Muslim-majority Jammu and Kashmir.

The BJP was at 38.7% while the Congress was slightly higher at 40.5%, three hours after the counting started at eight in the morning.
