Two Alameda police officers involved in the 2021 arrest of Mario Gonzalez which led to his death had manslaughter charges against them dismissed because of the statute of limitations, a judge ruled Monday.

In what could be a big blow to embattled Alameda County District Attorney Pamela Price as she faces a recall in November, involuntary manslaughter charges against two of the three Alameda police officers charged in the killing of Mario Gonzalez have been dropped this week.

The ruling to dismiss charges against officers Cameron Leahy and James Fisher marks another twist in a case that drew comparisons to the 2020 murder of George Floyd.

Manslaughter charges against two Alameda police officers involved in the 2021 death of Mario Gonzalez in police custody were dismissed Monday by Alameda Superior Court Judge Scott Patton.

Two Alameda police officers no longer face charges in connection with the death of 26-year-old Mario Gonzalez after a judge's ruling Monday. In the ruling, an Alameda County Superior Court judge agreed with a defense motion to drop involuntary manslaughter charges against Alameda police officers James Fisher and Cameron Leahy because it was determined the charges were not properly filed within the three-year statute of limitations.
