The Game Awards is approaching fast, and despite fighting games experiencing a renaissance in recent years, only one can become the champion in 2024.

This was the main takeaway from Monday’s nominations list. TGA’s voting jury is large and internationally diverse, and in the past its collective taste has tended to settle in a rather conservative place. But the industry’s lean year has led the jury to a suite of nominees that is varied, high-quality, and culturally rich.

The Game Awards’ Game of the Year (GOTY) category is highly-contested year after year, and 2024 is no exception. With the list of nominated games being limited to a mere six titles, plenty of games didn’t have a chance to vie for the coveted GOTY trophy – but there are a few massive snubs we can’t help but puzzle at this year.

Other categories honor much smaller projects that didn’t land nominations at The Game Awards. The nominees for Bite-Sized Game includes Buckshot Roulette and Clickolding, while Cryptmaster and Oddada are up for the show’s Innovation award. Here’s the full list of nominees.
