Caution regarding buying tickets in advance. We thought we would beat the crowd and purchase Cinque Terre passes in advance. Our flight and ultimately our vacation was canceled by British Airways due… Full review by CL1947

La Spezia Port: My Family of 4 plans to head to Monterroso and Vernazza at this port. I am thinking of taking a ferry to Monterroso, a train to Vernazza and then a train back to La Spezia. Another option would be the reverse, train up and ferry back. Thoughts?

I agree with the previous reply--it depends on how much time you plan to spend in the 5Terre area. It is great to connect to the towns on foot and by train. By hiking, you'll get many different views of the sea and steep hillsides. Please expect that the hikes between towns involve hills and stone steps with lots of up and down, depending on the direction you take. A fairly easy hike is to take the bus from Manarola uphill to Volastra, then begin hiking downhill towards Corniglia (1 1/2 hrs hike), the only town that doesn't touch the sea. Trains are frequent between towns and easy to use We took the boat from Manarola to Portovenere, which you can also catch in Riomaggiore to cut off some of the travel time (approx 45 mins on the water). Portovenere was lovely, with a pretty piazza and cafes in the center of town and an easy walk to the church and fortress on the point. IMHO, you can't go wrong, however you decide to spend your time in this spectacular place!

Hi there, we are flying to Florence tomorrow for 10 days and thinking of driving to Parco Nazionale delle Cinque Terre for a day trip. Can we drive directly to Riomaggiore? Or should we drive to La Spezia and take the train in? Is it easy to park our car there? We have 2 kids and 3 adults. I will be grateful if any one can give me some tips. Many thanks. Su x
A:
We took the train to La Spezia and took the boats to the Cinque Terre towns. You will love the view of the towns from the water side.
Q:
Does the "Cinque Terre hiking day trip from Florence" include the park visit?

The day tour out of Florence brings you on one trail. Corniglia to Vernazza, this is the #2 blue trail and is crowded. They bring you to all 5 of the 8 villages, so you are pushed through in 7 hours. I would recommend that you come and stay here to really see this area. The night time is also better because all these tours have gone home. They are the ones who fill up the trains, boat and villages.
